Living Wills

What is a Living Will?

A Living Will, sometimes called an Advance Decision, allows you to set out in advance which specific medical treatments you would not want to receive if, in the future, you were unable to make or communicate that decision yourself.

It is not the same as a standard Will, and it is not about giving up control. In fact, it is about keeping control by making your wishes clear while you are able to do so.

A properly prepared Advance Decision can help:

· make your treatment wishes clear to doctors, carers and loved ones

· reduce uncertainty and difficult decisions for your family

· support your right to refuse specific treatments in specific circumstances

· give you greater peace of mind that your wishes are properly recorded

For some people, this may include decisions about life-sustaining treatment, but the wording must be clear and carefully prepared so it reflects your wishes and can be understood when it matters most.
